Tom Burton

Principal Engineer, Fairheat

Tom is a Principal Engineer at FairHeat with over six years of experience in heat networks, who specialises in optimising heat networks and driving regulatory advancements. Tom is a Chartered Engineer with CIBSE and currently leads FairHeat’s Industry Standards Team, working with DESNZ to develop the Heat Network Technical Assurance Scheme (HNTAS), shaping the future regulatory framework for the UK's heat networks.

 

Tom is an active member in the industry, contributing his knowledge and experience. In 2020, he completed a research project investigating the techno-economic feasibility of externally accessible HIUs. This work has been recognised internationally with Tom being invited to present his findings at the Smart Energy Systems 2020 conference in Denmark and later accepted into CIBSE Technical Symposium 2021. In 2023, FairHeat were engaged by DESNZ to produce a set of guides on how to improve the performance of legacy systems – the Heat Network Optimisation Guide (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/heat-networks-optimisation-guidance-to-help-operators-improve-performance). Tom played a key role, as co-author, contributing to the successful delivery and distribution of this guidance.
